Sherlock Holmes Museum Busts

We modelled and 3D-printed seven busts of famous Sherlock Holmes actors for an exhibit at the Sherlock Holmes Museum on Baker Street. Each bust was meticulously digitally hand sculpted by our in-house 3D artist using reference photos to capture the likenesses of these iconic actors throughout the years.

The Brief

The client commissioned seven busts of actors who portrayed Sherlock Holmes over the past 100 years in film and TV for an exhibit at the Sherlock Holmes Museum. Each bust needed to accurately capture the actors’ appearances as they were in their respective Sherlock Holmes roles. To ensure stylistic consistency, all busts were to be sculpted by the same 3D artist.

What We Did

Creating custom busts from reference photos is one of our specialities. This project highlights the remarkable results achievable through the skilled craft of digital sculpting from photographs.

Our in-house 3D artist sculpted the busts based on reference photos of the actors as they appeared in their respective Sherlock Holmes roles, dating back to 1899.

We meticulously captured the unique facial features and intricate details of each actor’s appearance. Each sculpt went through multiple iterations until we received positive feedback regarding the recognisable likeness of the faces from various stakeholders.

One of the main challenges was sculpting the older Sherlock actors, as reference photos were often limited and lacked definition.

Here is a list of the actors we sculpted and the years they portrayed Sherlock Holmes:

  • William Gillette (1899-1930)
  • Basil Rathbone (1939-1946)
  • Peter Cushing (1959-1968)
  • Jeremy Brett (1984-1994)
  • Robert Downey Jr. (2009-2011)
  • Ian McKellen (2015)
  • Benedict Cumberbatch (2010-2017)

The 3D printed busts served as mould masters for our clients, who cast the final busts in stone-effect material. These finished pieces are now proudly displayed at the Sherlock Holmes Museum.

Result

Our clients were delighted with the set of seven Sherlock Holmes busts, which are now proudly displayed as stone-effect casts at the Sherlock Holmes Museum.
