We created a large-scale 3D sculpture of the Team GB Lion. The Lion sculpture needed to be freestanding and robust to withstand travel to Paris 2024 and handling by multiple parties. The main body of the sculpture needed to be made of two parts for easy assembly into one piece on arrival. The red and blue pieces represent the 28 core Olympic sports. The red and blue pieces had to be easily removed and reattached, so that athletes could sign the model in different locations throughout the Paris 2024 games, creating a unique, interactive and memorable sculpture in the process.
We transformed the 2D Team GB logo into a three-dimensional, large-scale interactive sculpture.
We initially created a miniature prototype to test the concept and assembly. Our process involved designing and prototyping a mechanism for the Lion to stand freely and ensuring the various parts fit together seamlessly. The sculpture features a large white backing board, that splits into 2 parts for easy transportation. There are 28 separate blue and red pieces—matching Team GB’s colours—that attach via magnets, enabling them to be detached with ease.
Once we validated the initial prototype, we scaled up the model to 1m x 1m, and 3D printed it to the final size. The result is a sturdy, freestanding sculpture of the Team GB Lion, ready to be showcased at the Athletes’ Olympic Village in Paris.
The final sculpture was received well, and it will be used in the Athletes’ Olympic Village during Paris 2024.
